(FYP 1) Week 4: Project Research

For this week, I studied the references for my FYP title to carry out the Literature Review process, which required research on previous similar projects related to my FYP title. My FYP must be different from past projects in terms of modifications like scope reduction, objective revision, project application configuration (to a new one), functionality change based on application, and more. In addition, in terms of upgrading innovation, including new features, modifying the project components used, and using systems with cutting-edge technologies like IoT, Machine Learning, and others. Therefore, I did research to find articles and journals as references related to my FYP title through various sources on the internet. I was able to discover several journals that are related to my FYP title through Google Scholar. Here are the journals that I will use as my FYP reference for the Literature Review process.

(FYP 1) Week 3: Project Title Confirmation

For this week, I've decided to change the title of my FYP to a new project because I feel that this project is still not enough to meet the desired requirements or criteria in accordance with the degree standard. Nevertheless, I had my doubts about whether or not this project would satisfy and convince my supervisor and the FYP assessors. This is due to the fact that I was unable to identify a clear problem statement for this project. The problem statement is important as the direction of a project is built. So, I began searching again for a new FYP. I've researched a number of new ideas from various sources, and I've finally found a suitable FYP idea that I can implement. This time, I feel confident because the project's problem statement is crystal clear which provides direction, goals, and objectives for me to accomplish.

My new FYP title is Development of Industrial Air and Sound Pollution Monitoring and Avoidance System using IoT. This project is based on a system that will detect polluted air and identify different sorts of harmful gases, and it is employed in industrial settings like factories. Additionally, this system will also identify the recorded dB sound value and detect dB sound that exceeds the normal dB sound level. This system makes use of IoT technology to gather, store, and analyse data in order to alert factory owners to take preventative action as well as nearby enforcement officers to enforce the industrial areas involved. At the same time, the output from this system will also respond to the industrial area as a reminder to control the operation more carefully.

With that in mind, I have informed my supervisor, Madam Azliza, to change my FYP title and to consult with her about the new project idea I have discovered in order to confirm my FYP title. As a result, my supervisor was satisfied with my presentation of this new project idea and approved it to become my official FYP title. Therefore, my supervisor has updated and registered my project name and title on the Official UniKL BMI FYP Website.

(FYP 1) Week 2: Workshop 1 Final Year Project Briefing & Surveying Title

Date: 12/10/2022 (Wednesday)
Title: Workshop 1 FYP Briefing

This week I attended the first workshop session for the Final Year Project subject which explained the introduction briefing of the final year project for this semester. The briefing was conducted online on the Microsoft Teams platform by Sir Mohamad Shaiful Bin Osman the Coordinator for the Final Year Project. This briefing was also attended by all students from FYP 1, FYP 2 and FYP Diploma where each piece of information given will be classified for each FYP respectively. The attendance of all the students that are taking the FYP was compulsory.

In the briefing, the coordinator briefed us about :

·         Introduction
·         Objectives
·         Credits and duration
·         Scope of projects
·         Title selection
·         Project Assessment
·         Presentation day
·         Submission date of the project

In conclusion, the students were required to carefully select the title of the project. For degree students, the title must reflect the capability and knowledge of a degree student. Students may select the titles that are offered by lecturers (FYP supervisors) or come out with their own ideas.

Date: 13/10/2022 (Thursday)
Title: Surveying Title

Since I met with my supervisor Madam Azliza last week, I have started to look for ideas to set my FYP title in several ways including discovering a list of potential electronic projects for my FYP which will enable me to pick a suitable project that I can improve in terms of features that will enhance the project's functionality and diversify its applications. The next option is to perform a new search from previous FYPs on the UniKL BMI website, which keeps all previous FYPs, in order to get ideas. As a result, I have at last discovered a project idea for my FYP. The concept is based on a room entry and exit monitoring system that also uses Internet of Things (IoT) technology. This system can store data on the number and time of people entering and exiting the room, and it can alert the person in charge of the room as security to prevent cases of theft and trespassing from occurring.

Once I have a concept for my FYP title, I meet with my supervisor once again to explain the concepts and discuss with her a title that fits the idea. As a result of the meeting and discussion, my supervisor is still not satisfied with my project idea because she feels that the project's output is so straightforward and common to FYP projects in the past. Therefore, she advised me to focus on the project idea's application, change its objective, add more functional elements like the Internet of Things, make a system that can save the data for analysis purposes, and emphasise the AI and machine learning systems. At the end of the meeting session, Development of Staffroom Monitoring System Using IoT is the title my supervisor thought would be suitable for my FYP. Other than that, I was instructed to find 3 journals that were related to my FYP, in order to prepare for a literature review.

(FYP 1) Week 1: Selecting a Supervisor

This week, I need to find a supervisor who will handle my Final Year Project (FYP) this semester. With the available time constraints, I need to get the supervisor as soon as possible this week to facilitate the process of finding the title to run smoothly. Therefore, I tried to contact the available lecturers from the electronics department. To make it easier for me, I only need to find lecturers who have taught me electronic subjects in the previous semester because a few of them I already know and am comfortable with their way of teaching, their character and the way they treat their students.

In a short time, I finally managed to get the supervisor that I wanted, Madam Hajah Azliza Binti Mohamad Arshad. Madam Azliza is a senior lecturer from Electronic Engineering Technology Section. Therefore, I met with her on Wednesday to discuss the topic selection and initial ideas to be used for the FYP. At that point, I was still looking for ideas or projects that I would run for my FYP. At the initial stage, Madam Azliza showed us the titles that can be taken under his supervision if I was interested in considering ideas from her and she also had no problem if I wanted to use my own ideas. At the end of the session, Madam Azliza suggested for do some research first before confirming to take the title. So I will continue to find my own ideas by doing research to get a suitable title for my FYP.
